The mall was built in 1960 on the 40 acre site originally occupied by the Chinook Drive-In Theatre. A new shopping concept of the time it was an open air mall designed for pedestrians.  The mall was enclosed in 1961 and in 1974 combined with the Southridge Mall to form the Chinook Ridge Shopping Centre.  Chinook Centre has undergone huge growth and many changes since then, the most recent being the completion of a $300 million dollar renovation in spring of 2001.
