Calgary Select: Groundhog Day - Balzac Billy

Groundhog Day

Billy.jpg

Groundhog Day is February 2, 2009.

On this day the groundhog emerges from his hole to look for his shadow. If the groundhog sees his/her shadow then it means six more weeks of wintery weather.  If the day is cloudy and the groundhog does not see his/her shadow then it means spring is nearby.

In Alberta we have our own Groundhog that goes by the name of Balzac Billy. The hamlet of Balzac is a small area just north of Calgary and before Airdrie. Balzac Billy is not quite as famous as Punxsutawney Phil but he is getting more attention every year. Find out more about Balzac Billy at www.balzacbilly.com
