RRSP - Home Buyer's Plan Minimize

The Home Buyer's Plan allows you to withdraw up to $20,000 from your RRSP's to buy or build a qualifying home for yourself ( as a first-time home buyer) or for someone who is related to you and is disabled.

Only the annuitant ( legal owner of the RRSP) can make these withdrawals. Once you have done so you must repay the amounts over a 15 year period.

There are certain conditions for participating in this plan. You must be considered a first-time buyer ( first-time has a separate set of definitions, see the Canada Revenue Agency site for details - link provided below) or you are doing this for a related disabled (again more definitions) person.

In addition:
You must enter into a written agreement to buy or build a qualifying home.
You intend to make it your principal place of residence.
Your HBP balance on January 1 of the withdrawal year is zero.
Neither you nor your spouse or partner owns the home more than 30 days before the withdrawal.
You are a resident of Canada.
You buy or build the home before Oct 1 of the year after the year of withdrawal.
