BBQ On The Bow Society will host the 17th Annual BBQ On The
Bow Festival 2009, Sunday from 10:30am to 5:30pm at Eau Claire Festival Market. Canada’s Oldest BBQ Competition “Home of the Alberta BBQ Championships”.

Saturday afternoon hosts the Judging for the BBQ Sauce and Chef's Choice Competitions 3:00 to 5:00PM.

Then Sunday kicks-off with Main Stage Entertainment featuring local concert bands, Stampede Talent Search winners, top Canadian blues musicians and bands.

Other festival activities include Children’s Craft Tent, a BBQ Food Pit & Coffee Concession, Alberta Producer's BBQ demos, Street Zone and General Store - goods for sale to the public.

tents.jpgCalgary Select attended the 14th Annual BBQ on the Bow that was held September 3, 2006 at the Eau Claire Market. This event included the following: Alberta Championship BBQ Competition, Awards Ceremony, Main Stage Performances, BBQ Cooking Demos, Children's Craft Tent, General Store, Cookbook Corner and BBQ Food Concession.

 

Competition babecuing began more than 20 years ago in the United States.  Today more than 500 cities in Canada and the US host BBQ championships.

 

 

Competing teams are made up of a Chief Cook and up to three assistant cooks. These enthusiastic teams are up all night tending the fire and basting the meats for judging.

 

 

 

In the Alberta Championship, teams vie for recognition as the Grand Champion by earning the most points in all four required categories - chicken,ribs, butt and brisket.

judgestasting.jpgTeams are judged on taste, tenderness/texture and appearance in each category. The team with the highest accumulated points is crowned as the Grand Champion.  The winner also qualifies for the ultimate competition which is the "Royal" held annually in Kansas.

To the right is an entry in the Ribs category. It is about to be judged for its visual appeal.

We spoke to Stewart Church who was on the site and provided some interesting additional information about the competition. According to Stewart, judges are by invite only  and must attend a judging school that is held annually in May. Many of the judges are friends of the Society or are sponsors.
