2008-11 Capital Plan delivers $22.2 billion for municipalities, housing, hospitals, schools, and roads
2008-11 Capital Plan highlights:
- Overall, an increase of $3.9 billion; or 21 per cent, from Budget 2007,
- $3.3 billion for health facilities and equipment,
- $1.7 billion for schools,
- $1.5 billion for post-secondary facilities,
- $5.2 billion for provincial highways,
- $5 billion for municipalities,
- $1.1 billion for housing
Budget 2008 focuses on building Alberta's skilled workforce through education, training and employment investments
Budget 2008 highlights:
- More than $2 billion invested in adult learning, an increase of $221 million (12.1 per cent) including $125 million directed to creating new post-secondary seats
- K-12 education system operating support increases by $217 million (4.3 per cent) to $5.2 billion
- School boards receive a 4.53 percent increase in operational grant rates
- More than $234 million dedicated to moving more people into Alberta's labour force
- $149 million in Employment and Training;
- $80 million in Immigration; and
- $5 million from the new Community Development Trust
Alberta students achieve highest science marks in Canada
Alberta’s 13 year-old students have achieved the highest marks in the country in science, according to national test results.
Province invests $79 million to enhance students' career pathways
Students who choose career and technology studies (CTS) as an option will benefit from the Alberta government’s refocused curriculum, an expansion of programs and $79 million in funding support.
“As a government, our focus is on providing opportunities for Alberta students to find their passions and interests in a variety of career areas,” said Premier Ed Stelmach. “By expanding these career programs, students will have new learning opportunities in a range of areas from skills training to health programs.”
Schools broaden technology use to transform students' learning opportunities
The Alberta government is investing over $55 million this year to broaden technology initiatives in schools across the province to encourage students to complete their education and create meaningful learning experiences.
Twenty three teachers awarded a 2008 Excellence in Teaching Award
Twenty-three outstanding teachers and principals nominated by the public and their peers have been selected to receive 2008 Excellence in Teaching Awards. The awards recognize outstanding teaching ability and classroom leadership in schools across Alberta.
